Sarcomas are rare neoplasms requiring multidisciplinary treatment including orthpaedic surgeons, general surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, radiotherapists and basic researchers. Previous experiences within therapeutic protocols within finalized projects of the Italian National Council for Research (C.N.R.) confirmed the efficacy of multimodal treatment leading to important improvement in survival and quality of life in patients with sarcomas.
The first Finalized Project from C.N.R. “Control of the neoplastic growth” included a protocol on Ewing’s sarcoma (Responsible Prof. Cappellini, Florence, and Prof. Madon, Turin), a protocol on osteosarcoma (Responsible Prof. Campanacci, Bologna, and Dott. Gasparini, Milan), and a protocol for pediatric soft tissue sarcomas (Responsible Prof. Carli, Padova).
The second project “Oncology” included again a protocol on Ewing’s sarcoma (Responsible Prof. Putti, Bologna), on osteosarcoma (Responsible Dott. Bacci, Bologna), and pediatric soft tissue tumors (Responsible Prof. Carli, Padova). This project included, several other studies on sarcomas: the establishment of National Registries, specific research studies and surgical studies.
The third project “Clinical Applications of Oncologic Research”, besides confirming the previous therapeutical protocols on Ewing’s sarcoma (Responsible Prof. Rosito, Bologna), on osteosarcoma (Responsable Dott. Bacci, Bologna), and pediatric soft tissue tumors (Responsible Prof. Carli, Padova), a new theraeutic protocol on adult soft tissue sarcomas (Responsible Dott. Gherlinzoni, Bologna) was activated.
From the experience in the last twenty years, several specialists with proved experience in this field felt the need to organized a specific group, to continue the previous experiences.
This intention was circulated among the Italian centers from the beginning 1997 and the Italian Sarcoma Group (I.S.G.) was therefore informally constituted in Bologna the 10th June of 1997.
After a 5-year period of time, when reciprocal knowledge of the involved Institutions and the establishment of active collaborations, the I.S.G. was officially constituted the 8th of October 2002 with Notary Act and registered in the “No profit association register” of Bologna.
The activity is performed through the activation of PROTOCOLS and MEETINGS.
